Ginny BeckGinny Beck:

If I am being honest, I wasn’t planning on making KidsPeace my career.  I had just graduated from college with a degree in psychology and was going to work there a year or two to gain some experience and then look for another job or maybe even go back to school. That all changed when I immediately fell in love with the work, truly enjoyed the people I was working with and would go home at the end of the day (even on those really difficult days) feeling as though I was helping and making a difference in the lives of the kids and families we serve.

Fast forward 30 years and I still feel exactly the same way.

I am blessed to have had amazing role models growing up that encouraged me to always try to leave every situation a little better than you found it, to give more than you take and to treat others the way you want to be treated.  This is the way I try to navigate all situations whether at work or in my personal life.   When someone reaches out to me with an issue or a need, my first reaction is “How can I help?”

I am humbled and honored to be nominated for an award that, when it comes down to it, is really an award about how you treat others. When people that I respect and hold in high regard take time out of their busy lives and work days to acknowledge the work that you are doing by nominating you for an award like this, it is truly special.

What is also truly special is how I found out about being one of the 2024 KidsPeace Foundation HELP Award recipients.  One of the individuals who called to congratulate me via zoom is not only a current KidsPeace Foundation Trustee but also a former KidsPeace client.  I was so inspired after hearing her story and in awe of the courage she displays by openly sharing it with the world in the hopes of helping others.  She looks at being a Trustee as a way to give back to KidsPeace and has stated prior to receiving treatment at KidsPeace she didn’t see herself making it to her 18th birthday. She described feeling safe here and feeling as though the staff really cared about her.  All these years later she was able to mention her unit staff by name and express appreciation for the help they gave her and the kindness they showed her when she was a teenager.  I expressed to her on the call that day that it is success stories like hers that inspire and motivate myself and my fellow associates to continue to do the work we do every day.  To anyone who works in a helping profession, on those challenging days when you question whether or not you are making a difference, I would encourage you to think about her story.  And know that you are.

I have worked with so many dedicated individuals and met so many amazingly resilient children over the past 30 years it would be impossible to count.  I am looking forward to seeing what the next 30 years at KidsPeace brings – because as my friends, family and co-workers already know, I plan to work here as long as KidsPeace will have me.  I mean, after all, how can you not feel good at end of the day when you work at an agency whose mission is Hope, Help, Healing?
